Famous people who mysteriously disappeared
With everyone so connected, a celebrity disappearing without a trace is hard to believe. But, lo and behold, some actually managed to do it. Addiction, mental illness, or legal troubles are often the reason. Trouble and stardom often go hand in hand. Other times, they just wanted some peace and quiet. They needed the break from the media. Hiding away isn’t easy but when you want to do something, you do it.
A handful of celebrities managed to do it. They disappeared completely from the public eye. There are people like Richard Simmons, who no one heard from for three years. He eventually returned to the public eye, of course. But not all stories are fun and games. Bad news sometimes just foreshadows some other bad news. Michael Cavallari, reality-star Kristin Cavallari’s brother, went missing. The police found his body two weeks later.
Let’s find out more about these few celebrities. The few who managed to disappear from Hollywood’s eyes. The stories are amazing but some are just heartbreaking.
Nick Stahl went M.I.A. on his family
TMZ confirmed in 2012 that actor Nick Stahl went missing. He stared in In the Bedroom (2001). Rumors stated that he is floating about in Downtown Los Angeles. Shortly after, Stahl told his friend in an email about his plan to go to rehab. TMZ later confirmed the piece of news. He did turn up at a rehabilitation center in.
Stahl, however, went missing again that June. TMZ reported that he checked out of rehab against his doctors’ advice. His wife, Rose Stahl, told the tabloid her intentions. She decided to refrain from searching for her husband again. He knows exactly where she is and she will be waiting at their home. She’s saying that she is backing off out of love. Nick eventually did come home and apologize to his family in July. TMZ’s sources said he planned to go to Alcoholics Anonymous.
Things became quite intense for the Terminator 3 star, though. TMZ reported in June 2013 that he is on 5150 psychiatric holds. Nobody knows the reasons. Cops also found him and three others using meth in a motel that same month.
Ozzy Osbourne ditched his family
Ozzy Osbourne allegedly went in hiding because of family matters. Tabloids claimed Black Sabbath frontman’s marriage was ending because he was cheating. But we do have to say, his rumors of infidelities are in abundance.
He didn’t disappear for long, though. Page Six published the headlines on his disappearing in May 2016. The tabloid followed up with a confirmation he is good health and is staying in Los Angeles. Top-notch journalism right there!
The artist explained to E!News that he was staying with his family.
Sharon explained the end of her married life on The Talk (via Entertainment Tonight). She said that she is 63 years old and enough is enough. The pair acted chummy and normal again soon after the events, though. They look pretty happy together at a conference a few days later. Rumors started going around that they were lying to get publicity.
Governor Mark Sanford and his mistress
If you think politicians are crazy and plain weird, well you’re right. In 2009, Mark Sanford disappeared for about six days. The governor of South Carolina told people that he was going on a hike on the Appalachian Trail. He was in fact, really going to Argentina to visit his mistress. The media later found her to be María Belén Chapur. He returned to the United States later and got to beg for forgiveness.
His marriage ended because of that, of course. Sanford and Chapur later became fiance, though it would also end very soon.
Sanford announced the bad news about their engagement in a Facebook post. This shocked his wife-to-be. They did mutually decide to put their wedding on hold because of Sanford. He refused to choose a date for their wedding. Chapur told The New York Times that she is as confused as anybody. Like everyone else, she got the news from the press. Oh, the savageness!
Randy Quaid and Canada
Now we swear we aren’t making this up. Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi Quaid escaped to Canada in 2010. CNN says that they were seeking safety from a group allegedly was out to kill them. Their escape to Canada was illegal though. They used fake credit cards to pay for hotel bills. They stayed near one of their former homes. CNN reported that Canada gave the couple permission to stay in 2011. Evi got Canadian citizenship because she has Canadian roots. Randy, however, isn’t so lucky.
Canadian immigration officials detained him in October 2015. They plan to deport him back to the United States later that month. The crazy thing is, he and Evi were at it again. They tried to sneak back into the States through Vermont. Weird huh?
Casey Kasem’s family drama
In May 2014, Kasem’s children claimed they could not find him. A judge later ordered that they find the whereabouts of the legendary radio host. The judge also made Kasem’s daughter, Kerri his temporary conservator. Kasem’s children are in a legal battle with Kasem’s wife, Jean. According to CNN, Kerri believed that Jean took Kasem out of the country. She likely did it to gain leverage on Kasem court case.
They reported his disappearance to Santa Monica cops. Shortly after, they found Kasem in Washington. He died at the age of 82, about a month after they found him.
They buried the remains of Kasem six months later in Norway. But the ongoing battle between Jane and Kerri is still there, and it’s getting more intense.
Richard Stanley lived in the jungle
The 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau is anything but normal. Things happened on movie sets right? But this tops the list. It involves the firing of director Richard Stanley. Just three days into production, he had to leave the set. The Telegraph reported that Stanley was to be on a flight from the remote set in Australia to Los Angeles. However, he’s not on the plane when it arrived in LAX. The film’s extras later discovered him about a month later, though. He actually fled from the airport to a fruit plantation in the jungle. His own source of food was yams, cassava, and coconuts. He even brought along his personal stash of marijuana.
Even wackier is when Stanley actually teamed up with the extras. They wanted to get back onto the set by dressing up as a mutant dog and blending in with the background actors. His friend agreed to film the movie because he was directing it. So that worries him. He stated that it made him realize how bad the situation was without him. But like, he could’ve waited for the tape no?

Jason Mewes disappeared for about two years. The Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back star failed to show up for a drug-related court appearance in 2002. He finally did turn himself in though. The judge sentenced him to six months in rehab in 2003.
What caused him to go into hiding and out of it again? Entertainment Weekly reported that Mewes woke up on Christmas morning one day. He woke up from a deep sleep, and the couch he lying on was in flames. He hit rock bottom with drugs, and he realized that. A warrant is in place for his arrest in New Jersey since 2002. He reportedly got into a car and drove from California to New Jersey.
Mewes had many problems getting sober in the years that follow. The Chasing Amy star is finally drug-free in 2010 through the hard work. TMZ said that a Jay & Silent Bob reboot is in store for fans. They started filming in November 2018. Jason is now back! Get to work and the fans are waiting!
