The untold fact of Shaun White
Shaun White has achieved the reputation for his gravity-defying snowboarding tricks. He competed in some of Winter Olympic Games: 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 events. Shaun White has more than demonstrated himself as one of the all-time perfect. However, there are more things about this three-time Olympic gold medalist.
Read below in order to learn all about the Flying Tomato’s past. Note that his life is not all sunshine and snow days. Here are several details in it.
Bunny slope starting
Everyone may begin somewhere, and the same as White. The California native prefers snowboarding when he was just a kid. He selected to start snowboarding after his older brother joined in this hobby. White said that he knew the sport in such a normal way. However, it was really interesting to him. He had won his first snowboarding competition at the time he was just 7 years old.
His family soon adopted a daily routine of going to the mountains in order to help their boys practice. They met financial problems at that time. Therefore, they decided to all camp in a van at the base of the mountain overnight. They did not rent a hotel room.
Through the above story, the Whites are definitely a passionate bunch.
Become a million-dollar man
Shaun White has snagged rather than just the Olympic precious metals. He also gained several major sponsorships. White signed a 10-year confirmation with Burton Snowboards in 2008 (the Fortune magazine). This happened after achieving his first gold medal in 2006. He worked as the game publisher Ubisoft on the franchise. And that franchise was Shaun White Snowboarding. If that were not enough for him, he also worked with some companies. There were such as Red Bull, Target, and Hewlett-Packard.
Shaun White also earned money from stocks and real estate investments. He did not only focus on the competitions. And all in all, this iconic snowboarder has been worth among $40 million. But keep in your mind that he turned 31 in 2017.
Third time’s the charm
White made history when he took home another gold medal on the half pipe. It was after the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. And that time was 12 years after snagging his first gold medal at the 2006 event in Turin, Italy. The 2018 win made him become the first snowboarder to snag gold 3 times at the Olympics. It also marked him as the first American athlete to ever win the same individual Olympic event at 3 games.
That was pretty darn impressive. But it was not the only good factoid about this snowboarding legend.
Best of both boards
He may be famous due to his snowboarding skills. Besides that, White has also taken on another athletic career. It is skateboarding. Apparently, he feels super passionate about this kind of sport.
White is a pro skateboarder when being a teenager. And he is the only athlete who won a medal in the Summer as well as Winter X Games. That is an accomplishment. However, White has not done with the sports skateboarding yet. In fact, he has several lofty dreams for his future.
About the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, White has told his experience to the Today show in February 2018. And he said that they put skateboarding in. How excellent if he could go for the Summer Olympics? He also added that his dream would come true if he could compete in skateboarding in Tokyo.
Grabbing the guitar
White may be well-known in the sports world for snowboarding and skateboarding. He has also gained steam in the music field. And he did not only date Phantogram singer – Sarah Barthel. Otherwise, White also started playing guitar for the band named Bad Things. The band has released its first production in 2014 (reported Sports illustrated).
This career change is a significant departure for the athlete. White apparently did not use to be a part of a team effort. He said that the band is the only thing he did involving teamwork. It did not matter how good he is at playing the guitar. And the band must come up with an incredible song to make it work.
Unluckily, White’s moment with this band may have brought out the worst of him.
In August 2016, Bad Things drummer Lena Zawaideh expressed against the snowboarder. She prepared a lawsuit to go against White. The case was the breach of contract and sexual harassment. According to Page Six, Zawaideh claimed White spoke sexually comments to her. White sent her sensitive images of male genitalia. And he forced her to see sexual videos, including the “sexual fecal matter”. Zawaideh also asserted that her mate withheld money from her. White attempted to manage her appearance. He pressured her to don clothes, did not let her wear red lipstick. Zawaideh also claimed that White stuck his hand in his pants. And then, he tried to make her smell it.
TMZ later published a text message between Zawaideh and White. She wanted to prove at least several of her claims.
White called the lawsuit “bogus”. He settled with Zawaideh in May 2017 (via USA Today).
The lawsuit lingers
Though the lawsuit with Zawaideh came in 2017, the case did not receive much media attention by the time. That situation changed when White moved to the 2018 Winter Olympics. It was after the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements erupted in Hollywood. At the moment, he began the interviews for the Games. Then, reporters quickly ask him about the previous allegations.
According to The Washington Post, White had nothing about it. In his reply to a question about the lawsuit, he told a reporter that he was there due to the Olympics, not gossip.
He later apologized for his previous speech. And White told the Today show that he was really sorry that he chose the word “gossip”. And it was a poor selection of words to describe such a sensitive topic in the world today.
Avoiding the opposite sex
White’s dismissal of questions relating to his past lawsuit. That was not the only unclear decision he made within the press for the 2018 Winter Olympics. According to CNN Money, White also avoided female reporters within a press conference. And he actually did not call on a single woman for questions.
Reminding how women had their hands up at the conference. Christine Brennan told CNN Money that White and his group had never called on women. Brennan is CNN Sports analyst. Besides, they only called on men. And Brennan stated that it was not a positive look. A good look for White and the United States Olympic Committee.
Did he really disrespect the American flag?
He got some major flack for his clear disregard for the American flag. After achieving gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, White has walked through a crowd. And he held the flag, or, dragged it. The incident offends online.
One member tweeted that he/she appreciates White’s skills but PICK THE FLAG UP!! The American flag should not be in the ground!! Another tweeted that ‘Give that flag some respect!’.
White later mentioned that moment at a press conference. And he swore that he did not aim to disrespect the flag or that country. He remembered to handle the flag. White was attempting to put his gloves on and hold the flag as well as the board (via CNN). Honestly, if there was something wrong, he definitely did not mean any disrespect. And White also added that he is very proud to be part of the USA team and be an American man.
White’s sexual harassment case and his off-color Olympic antics. But they were not his top scandals.
In September 2012, the athlete met a serious problem with the law. It came after he faced a rowdy following a friend’s wedding. According to CBS News, White has destroyed a hotel phone. People also reported that White has pushed a fire alarm at a hotel. And as a result, the people had to run away from that building. Then, the police came to the scene. White then reportedly tried to flee. However, a concerned citizen chased after him. So he cannot escape and face to the public intoxication and vandalism.
Does not play well with other people
Concerning White’s apparent affinity for scandalous behavior. There are some rumors that the athlete’s friends wanted to keep their distance from him. Surprisingly, it was not White’s actions that his peers gave him major side-eye. But it was his total attitude.
A fellow snowboarder Brandon Davis told this to the Time. He said that the whole snowboarding community has not really liked Shaun. Davis agreed with White’s talent and hard work. However, he criticized his preference for acting alone. And he is apart from everyone when acts like a lone wolf. When he goes out for a test, he is there to win only.
